Overview: This second part of the three-part Metapsychology series delves into two major psychoanalytic frameworks:


• Ego Psychology, which focuses on the functions and development of the ego in adapting to internal and external realities.

• Object Relations Theory, which emphasizes the internalization of early relationships and their impact on personality and interpersonal dynamics. Building on the foundations laid in Part One, this module offers a bridge between classical Freudian theory and contemporary psychoanalytic approaches, equipping participants with the theoretical tools necessary for understanding human behavior in depth. Content & Key Topics


1. Ego Psychology
• Evolution of the concept of the ego in psychoanalysis.
• The role of the ego in mediating between id, superego, and external reality.
• Key figures: Anna Freud and Heinz Hartmann.
• Ego functions: defense mechanisms, reality testing, and adaptation.


2. Object Relations Theory

• Internalization of early object relations and its influence on personality development.

• Splitting, projection, and identification processes.

• Key figures: Melanie Klein, Donald Winnicott, and Ronald Fairbairn and Otto Kernberg Learning Outcomes.

By the end of this training, participants will be able to:

• Identify different defense mechanisms and their roles in maintaining psychic balance.

Instructor

Dr. Elie Abou Chacra

Dr. Elie Abou Chacra Licensed Psychodynamic Psychotherapist, Psychoanalyst & Clinical Educator, currently serving as Head of the Training Department at Nafsaniyoun Center. He holds a PhD in Clinical Psychology and Psychopathology from Saint Joseph University of Beirut and a Master’s degree in Arabic Literature from the Lebanese University.

With over two decades of clinical experience, dr. Elie specializes in personality disorders and the integration of psychoanalytic theory with contemporary neuroscience, regularly delivering seminars and conferences for mental health professionals. Elie is the author of a widely read Arabic-language book on psychodynamic psychotherapy and He is currently preparing to launch a TFP training and certification center in Lebanon in collaboration with Nafsanyoun center.
