Course Description

Overview
This second part of the Metapsychology series explores two influential psychoanalytic frameworks that expanded and transformed classical Freudian theory: Ego Psychology and Object Relations Theory.

Participants will examine the development of the concept of the ego, its adaptive functions, and its role in mediating internal conflicts and external reality. The training also introduces Object Relations Theory, focusing on how early relationships are internalized and shape personality, emotional life, and interpersonal functioning.

Building on the foundations established in Part One, this module provides a deeper understanding of personality development and contemporary psychoanalytic thinking.

Ego Psychology:

  • Evolution of the concept of the ego in psychoanalysis.
  • The role of the ego in mediating between the id, superego, and external reality.
  • Ego functions:

     * Defense mechanisms

     * Reality testing

     * Adaptation

     * Contributions of Anna Freud and Heinz Hartmann.


Object Relations Theory:

  • Internalization of early object relations and their influence on personality development.
  • Formation of internal objects. Splitting, projection, and identification processes.
  • The impact of early relationships on emotional and interpersonal functioning.
  • Contributions of:

     * Melanie Klein

     * Donald Winnicott

     *  Ronald Fairbairn

     *  Otto Kernberg

Course Outcomes

By the end of this training, participants will be able to:

  • Understand the evolution of Ego Psychology within psychoanalytic theory.
  • Identify the major functions of the ego and its role in adaptation and reality testing.
  • Recognize and analyze defense mechanisms from an ego psychology perspective.
  • Understand the fundamental concepts of Object Relations Theory.
  • Analyze the influence of early object relationships on personality development and adult functioning.
  • Differentiate between major object relations theorists and their contributions.
  • Apply concepts from Ego Psychology and Object Relations Theory to clinical understanding and case formulation.
