Course Description

Overview

This 30-hour hybrid training offers a comprehensive and clinically grounded introduction to neuropsychoanalysis, an interdisciplinary field that integrates contemporary neuroscience with psychoanalytic theory to better understand the relationship between the brain and the mind.


Drawing on the work of Mark Solms, Jaak Panksepp, Antonio Damasio, Karl Friston, and other leading thinkers, participants will explore how unconscious processes, affective systems, neural networks, and early emotional experiences shape human behavior, psychopathology, and therapeutic change. The program bridges psychoanalytic concepts with current neuroscientific f indings, providing clinicians with a contemporary framework for understanding psychological functioning and clinical practice.

Total Duration: 30 Hours


  • Introduction to Neuropsychoanalysis and its historical development.
  • Basic neuroscience for clinicians, including the limbic system, cortex, and brainstem.
  • Drives, affects, and the SEEKING system.
  • Affective neuroscience and emotional regulation.
  • Transference, attachment, and the limbic self.
  • The dynamic unconscious and contemporary models of consciousness.
  • Ego functions, defense mechanisms, and executive brain functions.
  • Trauma, memory, and the neural self.
  • Dreams, symbolization, and the emotional brain.
  • Neuroplasticity and therapeutic change.
  • Clinical integration of neuropsychoanalytic concepts through case discussions and supervision.

Course Outcomes

By the end of this training, participants will be able to:


  • Understand the core principles of neuropsychoanalysis and their clinical relevance.
  • dentify major brain systems involved in affect regulation, memory, motivation, and behavior.
  • Explain the relationship between psychoanalytic concepts and contemporary neuroscience.
  • Apply affective neuroscience concepts such as SEEKING, FEAR, and PANIC/GRIEF within psychodynamic case formulation.
  • Understand the neurobiological foundations of transference, attachment, trauma, and defense mechanisms.
  • Integrate neuropsychoanalytic perspectives into the interpretation of dreams and unconscious processes.
  • Apply principles of neuroplasticity and therapeutic change within clinical practice.
